Chief Estimator

Currently we are seeking an experienced dynamic individual to lead our growing estimating department. The individual will be managing one estimator and working directly with the senior project managers and our executive team. The individual will report directly to the President and must be able to take the lead, take initiative, and prioritize time in accordance with project schedules while meeting tight deadlines. SKYGRiD is a growing company so the applicant must be familiar with working in a high pressure, challenging environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Complete full quantity take-offs for new projects as per contract specifications
  • Conduct detailed analysis of contract documents and specifications to determine overall project requirements (bonding, insurance, etc.) and identify any associated risk factors (i.e. addendums)
  • Complete final cost estimates of a project through the use of On Screen software, incorporating all labour, equipment, and material data, pricing documentation, overhead and profit margins
  • Complete final tender documents for submission to the client
  • Meet strict contract deadlines and submission requirements
  • Responsible for the accuracy and completeness of submissions
  • Review the project budget, schedule, and project execution plan and identify any potential risks prior to the project starting and throughout its life cycle
  • Establish team assignments, schedules, and identify estimating review dates
  • Identify and qualify for high-potential opportunities and assist in securing new work by investigating leads, participating in estimates, working with subcontractors and/or participating in proposals
  • Maintain existing client, subcontractor, and supplier relationships
  • Assists in the coordination of subcontractor selection with operations team for pursuits
  • Solicit pricing from subcontractors and suppliers in order to determine the lowest price while meeting the company’s safety and quality standards
  • Compile and prepare information for monthly executive reporting
  • Work senior management to grow business in line with strategic plan
  • Manage staff and carry out annual performance evaluations
  • Train and coach estimating staff for future growth and development within the company

Required Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience:

  • University degree in engineering, construction management, or other relevant disciplines
  • Professional Quantity Surveyor (PQS) Designation is a plus
  • At least 10 years’ experience with large construction projects
  • Minimum of 5 years in a management position is preferred
  • Familiar with commercial & residential construction estimating in a general contracting environment
  • Extensive knowledge of key principles involved in bid preparation, including quantity take off procedures, sub-trade procurement, pricing and bid closing procedures
  • It is essential that the applicant understand engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications and construction practices and use this knowledge efficiently on a day to day basis
  • Proven ability to handle multiple projects at one time
  • Ability to be flexible and work in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to identify competitors and assess current market conditions
  • Ability to use industry relationships to create a competitive advantage
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Office applications including word, excel, outlook and PowerPoint
  • Must have expertise in using AutoCAD and On Screen takeoff
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD architecture & Revit is a benefit
  • Strong ability to develop and maintain relationships

  • Excellent decision making skills
